Brownwood’s new Hendrick Surgery Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Friday morning.

Dozens of Hendrick executives, business leaders, local officials and media members were on hand as Hendrick CEO Tim Lancaster and other speakers like Brownwood mayor Stephen Haynes spoke at a podium just outside the facility.

The center, which broke ground about a year ago, is a joint venture with Abilene and Brownwood physicians that will offer outpatient surgery for specialties including otolaryngology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, podiatry, urology, gynecology, ophthalmology, pain management and plastic surgery.

It will begin seeing patients on Thursday.

“This is a great day for Brownwood,” Haynes said during the ceremony. “We’ve got a group of doctors who believe in our community and say, ‘You know what, this is home. This is where I want to stay and where I want to build my career.’

“Instead of leaving and going to a metropolitan area to have the very best, they’ve brought the very best to you,” Haynes said.

Lancaster said the Hendrick Health System was approached by Brownwood surgeons who were interested in partnering on a facility. Born in Brownwood and a former CEO of the Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Lancaster said the facility is a “good fit” for Hendrick and for the Brownwood community.

It is Hendrick’s first freestanding location specifically for surgeries.

“I’m very excited about it. I have a great appreciation for the physicians that are here,” Lancaster said. “And I’m proud of Hendrick. I’m proud of what we do. For us to be able to bring the quality of care that we provide in Abilene to the Brownwood area, I think it’s very good for people here.”

Dr. Bohn Young is a Brownwood podiatrist who will utilize the Hendrick facility each week. He said it’s great for locals to have more choice in health care. “It’s a very updated facility with all the bells and whistles. It’s top-notch,” Young said. “It gives the community the opportunity to have surgery in a nice facility that’s right in the area. Hendrick is a great hospital out of Abilene, and this should be great for the community.”

The center includes a large lobby area with flatscreen TVs that will show families what phase of surgery the patient is in. The 13,400 square-foot facility includes three operating rooms and 13 pre-op or recovery rooms.

Cathy Casey is the nurse manager at the Surgery Center, part of its 11-person staff that will eventually expand to about 16. “I just felt like this was exactly where I needed to be,” Casey said. “Hendrick has a longstanding tradition of offering excellent patient care, and we hope to give the patients of Brownwood an opportunity to have exceptional care at a great facility given by superior physicians. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible.”

Hendrick’s director of regional services Brett Emmett has overseen the project from the beginning. “I guess I would liken it to having a child,” he said of the Surgery Center opening. “There’s the excitement leading up to it, but really I feel like the work actually starts after having the child.”

The Hendrick Surgery Center is located at 2401 Crockett Dr. in Brownwood. Hendrick’s flagship facility, the Hendrick Medical Center, is located in Abilene.
