The Brownwood Lions advanced to their 18th straight 7-on-7 tournament in dramatic fashion Friday, holding off a no-huddle Merkel offense in the final minute as the Badgers tried unsuccessfully to score a tying touchdown as time ran out.
The Lions held on for a 19-13 win as they hosted a last-chance qualifier.
Brownwood also won their first three games of the tournament, defeating Gatesville 55-26, Early 34-15 and Jim Ned 36-30.
“It was low-scoring,” head coach Kyle Mayfield said after the Lions’ victory over Merkel. “It came down to the last game and the last drive, and our kids were just resilient. They competed and found a way to get it done.”
The Lions will compete in Division 2 in the state tournament June 29-30 in College Station.
