Academy Lanes, the longtime Brownwood bowling alley, reopened late Thursday night with a completely new look and a new name — Rex’s Texas Lanes.
The reopening capped a whirlwind four-day renovation of the exterior and interior as part of a reality television series that is expected to air early next year.
As a camera crew from a production company filmed, about two dozen guests were invited inside to revel at the new look, enjoy some refreshments — and, of course, bowl.
Owner Lee Baird said he was contacted by representatives of a network earlier this year, and was chosen because his family was deciding whether to sell or renovate the decades-old Brownwood venue.
Laura Rhoades, production designer for the project, took a break from her bowling game to say a team that included artists, carpets, muralists, painters, plumbers and electrician worked alongside volunteers from the community.
“We had a team of amazing people come in and literally flip this place completely around,” said Rhoades, a Dallas native who now lives in Los Angeles.
“The whole community has rallied around us to really make this come to life. I will say this about your city, your community. I’ve never experienced the welcoming, the support and the volunteers that I have (experienced) here.”
