A 14-year-old Brownwood girl who was riding in a van with six other people was killed in a one-vehicle rollover accident Sunday night on Interstate 20 near Colorado City, the Department of Public Safety said.
Belen Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:55 p.m. accident, which happened when one of the van’s tires blew out two miles west of Colorado City in Mitchell County, the DPS said.
Four of the van’s occupants were from Graham and three — Martinez, a 13-year-old girl and an adult — were from Brownwood.
Passenger Margarita Martinez, 42, of Brownwood, was taken to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene with serious injuries. The DPS had no information on whether the other Brownwood teen, Erika Martinez, 13, was injured.
Ana Gonzalez, 40, of Graham, was driving the van east on the interstate when the left rear tire blew out, the DPS said. The driver lost control and the van went into a side skid, slid into the south barrow ditch and rolled over several times.
The DPS did not have information on whether Gonzalez was injured.
Other occupants were Isaias Renteriaz, 2, of Graham; Isabel Gonzalez, 15, of Graham, who was treated and released at Mitchell County Hospital; and Joselyn Renteriaz, 10, of Graham, who was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries.
Belen Martinez was not wearing a seat belt, the DPS said.
