The driver and passenger of a box truck that collided with two 18-wheelers carrying oversized loads near Brownwood Wednesday afternoon are in critical conditions in Abilene and San Angelo hospitals, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
The 5:25 p.m. accident happened on U.S. Highway 377, 1.5 miles north of Brookesmith, trooper John Hoy said.
Hoy identified the driver as Jose Lopez of Granbury, who was flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, and Luis Fierros of Grand Prairie, who was flown to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. Hoy did not have their ages.
The box truck, which was hauling remodeling construction equipment from Brady to Granbury, was traveling north when the truck crossed into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a southbound 18-wheeler, Hoy said. The box truck then hit a second 18-wheeler before going through a fence and stopping on private property.
Both 18-wheelers were carrying oversized loads from Solaris, Hoy said.
It is unknown what caused the box truck to enter oncoming traffic, Hoy said.
