A fundraiser to help the family of 14-year-old Belen Martinez, who was killed in a July 16 traffic accident, will be held Saturday at Trans Texas Tire, at Main Street and Baker in Brownwood.
The fundraiser, billed as “Catching Belen's Contagious Smile,” begins at 10:30 a.m. Hamburger plates, hot dog plates, and pulled pork plates will be sold. Hamburger and pulled pork plates are $8 and hotdog plates are $6.
All plates come with chips and a drink. Baked goods will also be sold, and a silent auction is being planned.
    Donations are welcomed.
All proceeds go to help out the Martinez family with funeral costs, medical bills and other expenses.
A GoFundMe account in Belen’s name has also been established.
Belen’s funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral home, with burial in Eastlawn Memorial Park.
Belen Martinez would have been a freshman this fall at Brownwood High School, her cousin, Josue Martinez, said earlier.
Belen was one of seven people riding in a van that rolled over on Interstate 20 near Colorado City. Belen and family members from Brownwood and Graham were traveling back from Durango, Mexico, where they had spent several days visiting other family.
Belen’s mother, Margarita, was seriously injured in the accident and was flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Belen’s 13-year-old sister, Erika, was also in the van and was not seriously injured.
