Brownwood, Texas 10/20/17: Brown County Citizens Against Ranger Tax Annexation

The following press release is being issued in response to recent allegations of illegal activities and threat of criminal prosecution made by supporters of Ranger College tax annexation.

Last week Ranger College tax annexation supporters canceled a press conference, and then later released a statement insinuating illegal activities and threats of criminal prosecution of opposition group leaders. The statement released by the political action committee, Vote YES Ranger College, included photos of Facebook posts by the Treasurer of the Erath Citizens Against Ranger Tax Annexation S-PAC, calling on landlords to send letters to tenants stating that annexation could cause rents to increase.

Recently asked to comment on the subject, Barry Carter, Treasurer of the Brown County Citizens Against Ranger Tax Annexation S-PAC stated the following, “I believe the statement issued by the District Attorney in Erath County speaks for itself, but to be clear, the allegations of illegal activity were completely unfounded.”

On October 16th, Erath District Attorney Alan Nash issued a statement regarding the claims of possible illegal activities, concluding that the “threats (by the Ranger College tax annexation supporters) appear to be calculated to suppress, deter, and punish opposing political expression and political activity.” Nash went on to state that, “advocates for Ranger property taxation should leave their desire to use the District Attorney’s Office to jail the political opposition out of the public discourse”.
