Brownwood school board members appointed home builder Codie Smith to the school board in Place 5 Monday night, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Brad Jetton from the board.
Jetton resigned to avert nepotism that would have arisen in the projected hiring of David Jones as an assistant football coach, school board president Michael Cloy and superintendent Dr. Joe Young said.
Jetton and Jones recently became step-brothers, Jetton said in his March 9 resignation letter.
The school board accepted Jetton’s resignation Monday, and Smith was sworn into office Tuesday. The Place 5 seat will be posted for election in November to complete the remaining two years of the term, Cloy said.
Jones could not be hired as as assistant coach until Jetton was no longer on the school board, Cloy said.
Young said Jones still had not been hired as of Tuesday, but said the district will move forward with the normal hiring process paperwork. “I anticipated that will be finished this week,” Young said via email.
Jetton’s letter of resignation, dated March 9 and addressed to Cloy, stated:
“It’s with great regret that I must resign my position on the BISD Board of Trustees effective immediately, March 9 … I found out today that our new athletic director, Coach Burnett, is hiring Coach David Jones, who has recently become my step-brother. I will happily resign my seat so that our program can progress. It’s been a great honor to serve this school and these children. My goal, from the beginning, was nothing more than to help our district succeed. I fully believe we have accomplished that and will continue to do so.”
