EARLY — Early police arrested a man Tuesday in connection with a stolen AR-15-style rifle, police said.

Gage Woodcock, 20, of Brownwood, was booked into the Brown County Jail on charges of theft of a firearm, possession of marijuana and possession or delivery of drug paraphernalia, jail records state. Woodcock remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of bonds totaling $13,000.

According to an email from Early police:

Officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 1000 block of Early Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. regarding an unwanted person. The caller said Woodcock was in an apartment where people wanted him to leave, and he refused.

Officers spoke with Woodcock, who then agreed to leave. The residents then pointed out that Woodcock left a backpack that he came with. Woodcock denied knowing anything about the backpack.

Officers then noticed a gun barrel sticking out of the backpack and questioned Woodcock about the gun. Woodcock still denied the backpack was his but other residents said he came in with the backpack, and they did not want the gun in their apartment.

Officers checked the gun, which was an M&P .22 caliber rifle with a bump stock. Officers learned the gun was entered by Abilene police as a stolen firearm.

Officers also found marijuana in the backpack.

Detectives are working with Abilene police on the follow-up investigation.
