Brownwood police recovered two stolen pickups from an apartment parking lot Saturday, as well as items from recent vehicle burglaries. Two people are in custody, and more arrests are expected, police said.

Investigators believe the suspects are linked to other crimes, Brownwood police Sgt. Troy Carroll and sheriff’s investigator John Moody said.

Juan Hernandez, 21, is in the Brown County Jail on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property, jail records state.

Logan Sides, 18, is jailed on a single charge of possession of stolen property.

Brownwood police said they arrested the two Saturday at the Woodland Crest apartments, 3700 Savoy. That’s where police recovered a Chevrolet 2500 pickup, reported stolen earlier Saturday in Goldthwaite, and a GMC Sonoma, reported stolen Saturday from the 4000 block of Glenwood.

Brownwood police Sgt. Troy Carroll said police had information that the truck stolen from Goldthwaite might be in Brownwood, and notified patrolmen. He would not say why police believed the truck was here.

Around 3 p.m. Saturday, Brownwood patrolman Ray Slayton saw a Chevrolet pickup parked at the Woodland Crest apartments, and the truck matched the description of the truck stolen in Goldthwaite, Slayton’s report states.

Slayton saw a man, later identified as Hernandez, and Hernandez’s sister get in the truck and drive away, and Slayton verified with dispatch that the truck was the vehicle from Goldthwaite.

Slayton called for backup, and he and Cpl. Mike Sheedy stopped the truck in the 1500 block of Indian Creek. Hernandez’s sister said her brother had shown up at her apartment at 11 a.m. and said he’d traded in his vehicle on the truck. She was just getting a ride to work and didn’t know the truck was stolen, Slayton’s report quoted the woman as saying.

Hernandez was wearing a gold ring that matched the description of a ring stolen in a Mills County vehicle burglary Friday night, Slayton’s report states.

Officers learned the identity of another suspect, Logan Sides, who was at the Woodland Crest apartments. Police went to the apartments, where Department of Public Safety trooper Martin Molotsky said he’d seen Sides putting items in a trash container, reports by Slayton and Sheedy state.

Police searched the trash container and found items including tools and a knife that had been taken from the stolen truck.

Then police saw the stolen Sonoma pickup parked at the Woodland Crest apartments, Carroll said.

He said Hernandez was charged in connection with the theft of the Sonoma, while charges related to the theft in Goldthwaite are pending in Mills County.

Police followed up on a tip and found golf equipment and other items, taken from the Sonoma, in a trash container at a car wash on Coggin Avenue, reports state.

“Patrol did an excellent job,” Carroll said.

Moody said Hernandez and another person who has not been arrested are suspects in the theft last month of a Chevrolet Suburban from Blanket, as well as the theft of a golf cart and vehicle burglary. The Suburban was found abandoned Sunday, Moody said.
