The Brown County Grand Jury has returned two indictments against former Brownwood police Sgt. Vince Ariaz alleging 30 counts of sexual contact with female police Explorers.
One of the indictments alleges 27 counts of sexual assault of a child and two additional counts of indecency with a child, all with the same alleged victim. The other indictment alleges a single count of indecency with a child with a second victim.
Grand jurors handed down the indictments on Sept. 6, and they were made public Tuesday.
Ariaz, 54, was arrested July 17 and placed on indefinite suspension by Police Chief Virgil Cowin, which amounted to a firing, Cowin and other officials said. The city later rescinded the suspension and Ariaz retired Aug. 14 in a settlement that ended the veteran officer’s plan to appeal his suspension.
Ariaz was released from jail on Aug. 16 after making bonds of $200,000. District Judge Steve Ellis has ordered Ariaz confined to his home and placed him on electronic monitoring as bond conditions.
Authorities allege in court documents that Ariaz fondled a female Explorer in 2004, and that he had sexual contact with another female Explorer 29 times between May 24 and July 17.
