Construction is continuing on downtown streets as city workers replace water mains, and it will be the end of summer before the work is completed, City Manager Bobby Rountree said.

Once the new mains are activated and connected to adjacent customers, the trench lines will be tested and turned over to the City of Brownwood Street Depart-ment for reconstruction or patching, city officials have said.

“We’re doing some patching already on Fisk. We will be paving on Chandler next week,” Rountree said.

“We’re doing three to four blocks at a time. It’s going to take us awhile to get through town.”

Street crews will repair streets as needed over the next several months, city officials have said.

For the duration of the work, expect daily road closures with detours. City officials ask that motorists respect the closures for their own safety and the safety of the construction workers.

The city’s goal is to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimum disruption to business and traffic, city officials said. Signs will provide directions and access to downtown locations.
