A fire that destroyed a vacant home Friday in north Brownwood is being investigated as possible arson, authorities said.
The fire, in the 2600 block of Hillsboro, began around 11:30 a.m. and burned the grass near the house.
Witnesses told police they saw a vehicle occupied by a man and a woman park near the house before the fire began. Witnesses said they saw the pair go in the house, police said.
Witnesses heard what sounded like hammering from the house, and the pair drove away. Several minutes after they left, a witness told police, she heard explosions and the house was engulfed in fire.
In other incidents:
• Officer Danny Hutchins arrested Randall Frink, 29, of Brownwood on charges of theft and public intoxication after he was dispatched to Wal-Mart at 5:06 a.m. Saturday.
Employees said they followed a man through the store as he tried to take items including gum, a daily planner, masks, jet light, a can of silver spray paint, batteries, and cough medicine. The man opened several of the packages, employees told police.
• Someone took commercial cleaning products from the back dock area of Pizza Hut, 507 W. Commerce, and tried to get in through an air duct return vent.
• Deputy Pete Bastardo arrested Katey Casey, 22, of Midland on an assault charge after a disturbance in the 400 block of Lakeside.
• Deputy Kelly Marsh arrested Jennifer Jackson, 21, of Brownwood on a warrant for credit or debit card abuse. Marsh and patrol Sgt. Jimmy Simpson went to a local restaurant looking for a woman with a warrant. After the woman was arrested on the warrant, she said she had marijuana in her clothing. Jackson wa also charged with possession of marijuana under 2 ounces.
