Another new scholarship has been established at Howard Payne University — this one for education students.
The Elizabeth C. Looby Scholarship has been establsihed to honor the memory, legacy and life of Liz Looby, a graduate of Howard Payne University, who died April 9.
Her husband, Jim, and sons, Jim of Stephenville and formerly of Brownwood, and John of Jacksonville, Fla., have established the scholarship in the School of Education.
The scholarship will be completely endowed when the total amount reaches a minimum of $10,000.
The scholarship has also been seeded and is allowing companies or churches to donate to the scholarhip fund.
Tax-deductible donations to the fund can be made to Louise Sharp, Chief Development Officer at Howard Payne University, P.O. Box 2369, Brownwood, TX 76804 or to James Looby, 1713 CR 318, Early, TX 76802.
Check donations must be made out to Howard Payne University and have Looby Scholarship in the memo line.
Students eligible to receive the scholarship must be majoring in education, enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours for which the scholarship applies and must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
“Liz” and Jim Looby met while attending Howard Payne, and she was primarily a teacher and homemaker, supporting her husband’s military career as a chaplain in locations throughout the world.
Following their move to Early, she helped coordinate the Heart of Texas Christian Women’s Job Corps (CWJC), along with Betty Evans, a ministry to help women in need develop job and life skills.
