A Brown County jailer intercepted an envelope addressed to an inmate that contained pictures, a two-page letter — and a small amount of marijuana.

Deputy Brian Lundy took a report Thursday from the jailer who opened the envelope, which was mailed from a woman in Austin, Lundy’s report states.

The letter was addressed to a 22-year-old inmate who was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges including engaging in organized criminal activity and aggravated sexual assault, jail records state.

Sheriff’s officials said the incident will be investigated.

In an unrelated incident, officer Dustin Bode was dispatched to area of Belle Plain and Cordell Thursday on a report that a man in a trench coat had a gun.

Bode found a trench coat-wearing man carrying what appeared to be a rifle in the 500 block of West Commerce. The rifle turned out to be an unloaded BB gun.

The man also had crack cocaine, Bode’s report states. Bode arrested Jesse Stewart, 38, on a charge of possession of a controlled substance under 1 gram, Bode’s report and jail records state.
