An unbelted passenger with his feet hanging out a pickup’s side window attracted a patrolling deputy’s attention early Saturday morning, and the passenger and the pickup’s driver were arrested on drug charges.

Deputy James Stroope saw a 2007 Dodge Ram approaching the intersection of Baker and Main shortly before 3:30 a.m., and he stopped the truck because of the unbelted passenger, Stroope’s report states.

As Stroope approached the vehicle he smelled marijuana, and he opened the front passenger’s door. Stroope saw the passenger trying to place a bag in his shoe.

Stroope also found a portion of a small white sedative pill in the passenger’s seat, and a bag of marijuana in a cubby hole inside the truck, Stroope’s report states.

The driver, Rodney Caulkins, 19, was booked into jail on a charge of possession of marijuana under 2 ounces, jail records state.

Sheriff’s officials also seized $614 from Hopkins.

In unrelated incidents, an invitation-only birthday party and dance at the Brownwood Coliseum Saturday led to two arrests.

Brownwood police Lt. John Harper, who’d been hired as security, saw a man standing outside a door looking in. Harper asked the man if he had an invitation and asked him his name. The man gave a name that Harper learned was fictitious, Harper’s report states.

Harper believed he’d dealt with the man previously when he was deported as an illegal alien, and confirmed his identity as Inosencio Castaneda, 45, who had a city warrant.

Harper arrested Castaneda on the city warrant and on a charge of failure to identify. A Border Patrol detainer will be issued, Harper’s report states.

The party progressed, and Harper heard yelling around 12:20 a.m. Harper moved through the crowd and saw a man chase and strike another man who was leaving the dance floor.

Harper arrested Gonzalo Cruz, 20, on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication, jail records state. The man told Harper he hit the other man for dancing with his woman, Harper’s report states.
