Two professors from the School of Music at Howard Payne University have been selected as faculty members for the 2008 Texas Baptist All-State Choir & Band, and a Bangs High School student has been named to the band.

Corey Ash, assistant professor of music and director of bands, will serve as the band director, and Dr. Jay Smith, assistant professor of Christian Studies, will be the pastor.

Ash and Smith will travel along with the All-State Choir & Band to Germany from July 22 to Aug. 5.

Dr. Robert Tucker, dean of HPU’s school of music, fine arts and extended education, will also be going on the trip. Tucker said he has previously traveled with the group as a sponsor. But this time, he will be joined by his son, Jordan, a member of the All-State band and sophomore at Bangs High. Jordan Tucker will be playing French horn, his father said.

The choir and band are made up of ninth through 12th grade students from Baptist churches across Texas. Students must send audition tapes or have qualified for Area, Region or State honors through their local school’s music program to be considered for the All-State program.

“I am so excited to be able to work with these young people in spreading the Gospel through their musical talents,” Ash said. “It is so exciting to see how music opens doors and crosses language barriers as nothing else can. I’ve experienced it, and I can’t wait for them to see it for themselves.”

The highlight of the trip will be the students’ performance at the Baptist World Alliance Youth Conference in Leipzig, Germany. They will be meeting and worshipping with more than 6,000 youth from across the world during this conference.

The group will be working with the Outreach Ministry Tour in Berlin on their trip, as well as holding performances at churches in Potsdam and Wittenberg. The All-State Choir & Band will be performing two concerts in the Dallas area on Sunday, July 27, before they leave for Germany. At 10:30 a.m. they will be performing at First Baptist Church of Duncanville and that evening at 6 p.m. they will be in concert at Park Cities Baptist Church of Dallas.

The Texas Baptist All-State Choir and Band is sponsored by the Music & Worship Ministry Team of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

The goal of the program is to train students to improve their choral and instrumental skills so that they may use them during their service at local churches and in mission opportunities.
