Firefighters from Brown and Coleman counties worked throughout the day Thursday to contain a grassfire just west of the Brown County line. Thousands of acres were consumed in the fire that was still being fought at dark. Firefighters said several barns were destroyed, and at least one home residence a mobile home was severely damaged from smoke and heat. Numerous farmers lost their hay crop. The fire started, firefighters said, on Wednesday night when 1,500 acres burned, including property with a high fence that was running elk. After being battled Wednesday, the fire restarted Thursday amid high temperatures and strong winds. At least one helicopter and two airplanes joined the fight. Photo by Calvin Brown
