Red Cross assistance will soon be available to residents who sustained flooding damage in last month’s heavy rains.

Minessa Mesic, executive director of the Brownwood Red Cross office, said residents who need assistance as a result of June 17 street flooding and the Lake Brownwood flooding of June 28-29 should call (866) 438-4636.

That number will be answered at a call center, and Red Cross representatives will take information and begin the process of getting the residents who need help and the local Red Cross office in touch with each other, Mesic said.

Volunteers will schedule home visits to assess needs, and Red Cross debit cards can be issued on the spot in some cases.

Local damage assessment teams have determined that one home sustained “major” damage, 10 sustained “minor” damage (up to 2 feet of water) and 306 homes received up to 2 inches of water, Mesic said.

Disaster assessment teams are treating the June 17 street flooding and June 28-29 lake flooding as a single event.

Assistance through FEMA and the Department of Emergency Management is pending, Mesic said.
