A house on Avenue C, less than one block off of Austin Avenue immediately behind Academy Lanes, was battled by the Brownwood Fire Department on Sunday afternoon. Smoke from the fire, which started shortly before 2 p.m., could be seen for several miles, according to reports. The house was quickly engulfed by flames, and firefighters fought to keep the blaze from spreading to adjoining property. No official report was immediately available, but one resident of the neighborhood said the house was abandoned. However, an adjacent home was occupied, and it caught fire and was destroyed as well. Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston told the Bulletin that the woman who lived in the second house lost everything, including her vehicle and medication. This photo shows the rear of the vacant house, taken from the Avenue B side, just as the fire was reported.
