Brownwood police arrested a 49-year-old man on a charge of tampering with evidence after, police said, he threw down a crack-smoking pipe as an officer approached.

Frank Banks of Brownwood was booked into the Brown County Jail on the evidence tampering charge, a third degree felony, and on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor, jail records state.

Officer Brandon Arnold stopped a man who was walking in the area of Beaver and Crothers, a neighborhood with a high amount of drug activity, at 3:04 a.m. Sunday, Arnoldís report states.

As Arnold got out of his patrol car, he saw the manís arm come up in a quick motion and heard something hit the pavement. Arnold saw a crack pipe a few feet away, and the man said he threw it because he feared getting in trouble if caught with it, Arnoldís report states.

In an unrelated felony arrest, officer Ray Slaton tried to make a traffic stop at 1:37 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Austin. The driver would not stop until he turned into a driveway in the 1100 block of Duke.

The driver got out and ran in a house. Cpl. Michael Sheedy and officer Danny Hutchins went inside and found him.

Michael Castaneda, 23, was booked into the Brown County Jail on a charge of evading arrest with a vehicle, jail records state.

Slayton was dispatched to the Brownwood Regional Medical Center emergency room on a report of a disorderly person. Slayton arrested Melanie Irons, 51, on a charge of public intoxication. Officer Troy Grusendorf arrested Bettina Crawford, 39, of Brownwood after responding to a report of a domestic disturbance at the Days Inn, 515 E. Commerce. Grusendorf arrested Tiffany Daniel, 20, of Brownwood on a charge of hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct after responding to a report of a verbal altercation involving several people in the 1700 block of Dallas. A man told police he parked his car under the Bill Monroe Overpass because it looked like rain, and one of the carís windows would not roll up completely. The man worked at a nearby construction site.

Someone broke into the car and took an ignition interlock device, medication, a cell phone and a phone charger.
