Bulletin Staff Report

Three ceremonies — with two at the same location — are planned in Brown County Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

The annual Memorial Day Celebration hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3278 will begin at 10 a.m. at Eastlawn Memorial Park. Dan Locker, M.D., will deliver the address.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 2:45 p.m. at the Central Texas Veterans Memorial near the veterans clinic across from Brownwood Regional Medical Center. The event will officially open a fund-raising campaign that will extend through Veteran’s Day for the construction of the memorial to veterans killed in service to the country in this area.

Then, at 3 p.m. at the same location, those gathered will pause to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance, described as “an act of American unity in a shared moment of remembrance for our fallen heroes.” The event is being headed by the White House Commission on the National Moment of Silence, established in December 2000.

Those not able to attend the ceremony are encouraged to observe the moment individually, in their own way, by pausing in silence, ringing a bell, turning on headlights if driving or listening to radio stations that will be playing “Taps” at that hour.
