Special to the Bulletin

The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit of Brownwood has announced its call for entries for the 10th annual juried art exhibit.

In celebration of the milestone anniversary, officials said the Arts Council of Brownwood will offer an additional $500 Stars of Texas 10th Anniversary Award this year. The exhibit is scheduled for Feb. 3 through Feb. 15, 2008, at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center, 600 Depot St., Brownwood, Texas.

Every year the exhibition continues to grow and expand. The exhibit draws Texas artists from cities across the state in a variety of 2D and 3D categories. The two-week exhibit allows ample time for viewing, as well as daily demonstrations. It is open to both the public and the area schools at no charge. This year the exhibit is sponsored by the City of Brownwood, the Arts Council of Brownwood, Jane Ellen Jamar, Margaret and Stuart Coleman, Randolph Chrysler Dodge Jeep of Brownwood and the Kohler Company.

Juror for the 2008 exhibit is Denny Pickett, who has been a member of the art faculties of Baylor, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Midland and Temple colleges, and is currently a lecturer at Baylor. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwestern, a Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech and has done post-graduate work at the University of Wisconsin. His most recent work explores the artistís relationship to the natural environment and is done primarily on location in a limited palette.

Entries will be accepted for judging at the Depot from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. A non-refundable entry fee of $15 is required for each entry and payable at time of entry. The maximum number of entries from each artist is three. Specific eligibility requirements are described in a prospectus available at local chambers of commerce, local art associations and the Web sites www.brownwoodtx.com/

All art exhibited must be for sale. All sales will be handled through the Arts Council of Brownwood. A 25 percent donation is required for sales generated by the exhibition.

The third annual Paint-Off Competition will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, again offering a cash prize of $500. Similar to the plein air competitions so popular in artistsí circles, the Paint Off will be held in the ballroom of the Depot Civic and Cultural Center, with the outdoor plein air painters at designated sites, allowing the public to view artists at work. Artists may register at the Paint-Off Pre-Registration and Reception from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 and from 8-10 a.m. a.m. Saturday.

Artists are required to register and have their painting surface stamped before painting. Participants must be 18 or older and a Texas resident. This event is open to all 2-D media and tasteful subject matter except photography. All stamped work must be entered for jury by 2:30 p.m.

The $500 will be awarded at 4 p.m. that day. A $20 fee will be required for this competition and each artist must supply his own easel and keep equipment compact. For information contact Ruth Wheelis at (325) 646-7167 or at rawdew@verizon.net.
