It was a big start to a big golf tournament Friday night, when the TexasBank Golf Classic Charity Fund donated $90,000 to five area charities, four based in Brownwood and one in Stephenville.
“People ask me, ‘Why do you do this?’” C. Norman Tinkler, vice chairman and CEO of TexasBank told the tournament’s sponsors. “When they have to ask that — they just don’t get it. This is not about a golf tournament, it’s about the Pregnancy Care Center, it’s about TREAT, it’s about CASA, it’s about the Boys and Girls Club, it’s about Latchkey. It’s about people who need our help and that we can join together and give them that help.”
CASA in the Heart of Texas, the Brown County Boys and Girls Club and the Pearl Griffin Memorial Latchkey Program each received $20,000 donations from the tournament — money that Tinkler said would be spent on expanding local programs and services. With each donation, he spoke about how each organization serves the area.
TREAT, Tarleton Equine Assisted Therapy, received $10,000.
A special $20,000 donation was made to the Pregnancy Care Center in a fund-raising effort spearheaded by Paul and Linda Waldrop.
Over the past four years, the tournament has been able to raise and donate $215,000 to area charities. The effort was originally planned to last four years with a goal of raising $100,000.
“You can see why I get motivated. This has grown into something I didn’t envision,” Tinkler said. “The momentum we’ve gained this year can’t be wasted.”
Tinkler told the sponsors that he would do everything he could to gain their respect through the Golf Classic, which continues through today. Final tournament results will appear in Monday’s edition of the Brownwood Bulletin and a special pull-out section with additional tournament coverage and photos will be in next Sunday’s edition of the Bulletin.
