BANGS — The first in a series of Independence Day events in Central Texas will be held tonight as Bangs hosts its third annual Heart of Texas Freedom Celebration at Bangs Memorial Stadium.
Vendors with a variety of foods, items and activities will be ready when the gates open at 6 p.m., and the evening will be capped by a $12,000 professional fireworks show, coordinator Verba Hamrick said.
The fireworks show will begin at dark, which will be approximately 9:15 p.m. Rick Phelps will be the announcer, and Sydney Richard, 5, will sing the National Anthem.
Those attending are urged to bring their lawn chairs, or plan to sit in the stands of the stadium. Officials said the fireworks show will be a continuous presentation, with no time lapses scheduled.
An ice cream contest will also be held during the evening, chaired by Betty Ellis. All area residents are invited to bring in a freezer of their favorite flavor in time for judging at 7 p.m. After the winners are announced, the ice cream will be sold to those attending, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds will be divided among the first, second and third place winners as cash prizes, Ellis said.
Additional celebrations and fireworks shows are scheduled for Lake Brownwood, Comanche and Rising Star next weekend.
