A motel maintenance worker in Brownwood was seriously injured Tuesday when he fell off the motel’s roof.
Ruben Reyes, 53, a Days Inn employee, sustained a head injury and was flown by in an Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. He was undergoing surgery Tuesday evening to treat bleeding on his brain, Reyes’ son John, a Bulletin employee, said from the hospital.
Reyes was dismantling a satellite dish on the roof of the Days Inn around 12:40 p.m. when he fell from a third-story roof onto a patio on a second-story level, emergency responders at the scene said.
Estimates as to how far Reyes fell varied from eight to 12 feet.
Days Inn owner Mohan Kochicheril said one other person was on the roof when Reyes fell.
Guardian EMS employees and Brownwood firefighters tended to Reyes until the helicopter arrived. The helicopter landed between the motel and an adjacent Skinny’s store, and Reyes was transferred from an ambulance to the helicopter.
“We ask that people’s thoughts be with us,” John Reyes said. “We’re doing all right … we’re nervously waiting at this point. The nurse said everything was hopeful.”
