Special to the Bulletin

Officials with Girl Scouts of Central Texas are encouraging all girls in grade 6 and above to attend a Canoe Training Camp beginning July 20-24 to prepare for the upcoming Girl Scout Race on the River event.

Girls attending this week-long summer camp will learn the basics of canoeing — from paddle strokes to rescuing a canoe in distress — for only $35 ($25 for currently registered Girl Scouts).

Participants may choose between two sessions offered daily from July 20-24. The first session will be held from 6-7:30 p.m., and the second session will follow from 7:30-9 p.m. All participants will earn a patch for successfully completing the camp and will qualify for the race to be held in San Angelo on Sept. 12.

“The training these girls receive is remarkable,” said James Pidgeon, GSCTX development executive. “We had one girl learn how to swim just to be a part of the program and now she’s a fierce competitor. The race itself is a great opportunity for everyone to showcase their skill on the Concho at our Race on the River fund-raiser.” Sponsors for the Race on the River will help support leadership opportunities available to Girl Scouts. Two-person canoe sponsorships begin at $250 and in-kind donations of goods and services are always welcome.
