EARLY — A school bus driver who was the vehicle’s sole occupant escaped serious injury Thursday morning when the bus left Salt Creek Road after an S-curve and overturned.

School superintendent Brett Koch did not identify the driver, who had been released from Brownwood Regional Medical Center by Thursday afternoon.

The driver was taking the bus out to make morning pick-ups when the northbound vehicle’s right-side wheels got off in the grass around 7:15 a.m., and the driver over-corrected, Koch said.

There is no shoulder on the road, Koch said.

The bus hit a culvert and flipped at least once, landing on its wheels, he said.

Koch expressed gratitude that there were no students on the bus and that the driver was not seriously injured. “Having students on that bus — I can’t even begin to think,” Koch said. “Our prayers have been answered by the bus driving doing well, being released.”

The driver was belted in, which was a factor in his not being seriously hurt, Koch said.
