Brown County commissioners approved waterproof canvas-like covers for the 28 election ballot machines.

Money for the nearly $800 expense will come out of the county’s “ballot” budget.

“We’ve been lucky so far because we haven’t had problems, but if the day comes when it’s raining and we need to move the machines, it will be a problem,” Suzy Young, Brown County elections administrator.

“It always worries me when the forecast is for 60 percent rain, and it’s a day we’re moving them.”

The machines cost about $5,000 each, and Young said it “just makes sense” to purchase covers to protect them. The covers run about $30 each.

In other Court matters Monday, commissioners approved:

A $10,000 service contract for the courthouse computer system that includes data recovery in case of a server crash; A Windstream utility easement on County Road 121 in Precinct 4; Extension contracts for the Juvenile Detention Center with Burnet, Stephens, Young, Eastland and Gillespie counties and ratified extension contracts for JDC with Hood and Palo Pinto counties.
