Recent traffic stops in Early and Brownwood led to substance abuse-related arrests.

Early officer John Mills stopped a vehicle traveling at more than 70 mph in a 45-mph zone on Early Boulevard at 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Early Police Chief David Mercer said. The vehicle’s occupants included two children ages 8 and 4.

The driver smelled of alcohol, and Mills arrested him after a field sobriety test, Mercer said.

Mills obtained a warrant from Court-at-Law Judge Frank Griffin for a blood draw, and a blood sample was taken from Nicks at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Mercer said.

In an unrelated case, Sgt. Shawn Dibrell and patrolman Nathan Land made a traffic stop and on C.C. Woodson. As the officers spoke with the vehicle’s two occupants, they smelled marijuana and noticed that the passenger seemed to be trying to hide something.
