A Brownwood physician who was arrested in July 2006 on a warrant charging him with sexually assaulting a child in Arlington has been indicted by a Tarrant County Grand Jury.

Grand jurors returned an indictment on May 4 against Donald Pope, 53, for aggravated sexual assault of a child, Tarrant County District Clerk records state.

Pope, a family practice physician, is accused of assaulting an 8-year-old girl in an Arlington hotel room in 2000, Arlington police said earlier.

Pope’s attorney, Kirby Roberts, declined to comment on the indictment.

Brown County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Pope on July 24 in Brownwood on an Arlington Police Department warrant.

Arlington police said the accuser, now a teenager, told a church counselor in Brownwood on July 9, 2006, that she had been assaulted, and the counselor contacted police.

The accuser had been visiting the Arlington area with Pope and Pope’s daughter when the alleged assault occurred, police said.

Pope is a former chairman of the Brownwood Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees but is no longer on the board, hospital officials said.
