A public hearing on House Bill 621 regarding goods-in-transit will be held during this month’s meeting of the board of trustees of the Brownwood Independent School District.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the school district administration building, 2707 Southside Dr. It is open to the public.
According to information from the Texas Association of School Business Officials Web site, House Bill 621 passed in the last session of the Texas Legislature implemented a 2001 constitutional amendment that exempted goods in transit within the state from property taxes. Somewhat unusually, the exemption is granted unless the taxing jurisdiction chooses to opt out.
School districts and other taxing entities may continue to tax inventory eligible for the new freeport exemption, but an affirmative action by the board of trustees prior to Jan. 1, 2008, is required to do so.
Later in the meeting, the board may consider a resolution to continue taxation of goods-in-transit.
Other matters before the board Monday include a 2006-1007 audit, a proposal for roof replacements at Coggin Elementary, Old Lions Gym and the Boys and Girls Club. Reports from the superintendent are listed on the agenda on a proposed 2008-2009 school calendar and campus security measures.
