Bulletin staff report

When Brownwood firefighter B.J. Carnes was killed in a July 5 plane crash, his family suggested in his obituary that memorials — in lieu of flowers — be made to the Brownwood Professional Firefighters Association.

Brownwood Fire Chief Del Albright said he’s heard reports that someone has been soliciting donations and falsely claiming to represent the fire department and the association.

“The department is not doing solicitations by phone for B.J.’s memorial,” Albright said. “No one here is doing any solicitation or calls or anything.”

He said the association has received donations in Carnes’ memory through the mail.

The small homebuilt plane Carnes was piloting crashed on a ranch near Valera as he performed a flyover before the start of a fireworks show. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
