The opening bell of this year’s Brown County Relay for Life is less than a week away, and plans for activities are being finalized by the Relay for Life Committee.

Officials said a total of 32 teams have registered with at least 157 individuals participating. The event will be held from 6 p.m. Friday, June 6 through 6 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Relay for Life is a major fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society’s local chapter and helps support cancer research and educational programs.

“Hunting for a Cure” is the theme for this year’s event. Brown County Relay for Life coordinators began planning several months ago by attending trainings, RFL University and forming committees.

The schedule for activities Friday night and Saturday morning next weekend was announced by the committee on Friday.

The event will open with a survivors’ lap at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a caregivers’ lap at 7 p.m. Potato golf is set for 7:30 p.m., and a “fighting back” ceremony is set for 8 p.m.

The YMCA lap will begin at 8:30 p.m., with a three-legged race at 9 p.m. and “heads or tails” at 9:30 p.m.

The luminaria ceremony, during which the stadium’s lights are dimmed and candles are lighted in honor or memory of cancer patients, will begin at 10 p.m.

A “puffy race” is set for 11 p.m., and Mr. Relay Pageant will start at midnight. A limbo lap is scheduled for 1 a.m., alligator wrestling will be held at 2 a.m., a frozen T-shirt event will begin at 3 a.m., a poker lap is set for 3:30 a.m., “bust your bubble” will begin at 4 a.m., and mummy wrap will be held at 4:30 a.m.

From 8 p.m. until 4 a.m., ongoing events will include a badminton tournament, line dancing, cake and cookie walk, cancer facts scavenger hunt and camouflage face painting.
