Special to the Bulletin

Construction in the downtown area is continuing on Melwood, Mayes, Baker and surrounding areas, City of Brownwood officials said Thursday.

In the next few weeks, many of the mains will be tested and put into service, and the old mains will be abandoned.

Once the new mains are activated and connected to adjacent customers, the trench lines will be tested and turned over to the City of Brownwood Street Department for reconstruction or patching.

Street crews will schedule and repair as needed over the next several months. For the duration of the work, expect daily road closures with detours. City officials ask that motorists respect the closures for their own safety and the safety of the construction workers.

The city’s goal is to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimum disruption to business and traffic, city officials said. Signs will provide directions and access to downtown locations.

The water main work, contracted to Whitewater Construction, should be complete around the end of May to the first part of June weather permitting. Water mains are about 90 percent complete.

Street construction will continue for several months.
