Thomas Givan, 13, an eighth grader at Early Middle School, has some historic business to transact prior to Howard Payne University’s Junior Academy summer enrichment program set June 17-19. He is shown with Dr. Justin Murphy, director of the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom at HPU and Brand Professor of History, dressed as George Washington. As part of the “Foundations of American Citizenship” part of the program, Murphy and other HPU professors will don Revolutionary War era costumes to cover the basics of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Students will also be involved in a mock session of Congress, enacting legislation, and then reenact a famous trial. Engineers will also show how math and science can be used to solve problems. Registration remains under way; call Pat Locks at 649-5711. Cost is $75 plus a fee of $25 for supplies, snack and a T-shirt. This program is designed for middle school students. Photo by Calvin Brown
