Seven women are to be honored today as inductees into the Heart of Texas Girl Scout Council’s 2007 class of Women of Distinction.
Bradlee Dodds, Dr. Nancy Jo Humfeld, Evelyn Hutchings, Katy Lord, Priscilla Monson, Kit Timmins and Michelle Wasson are the women to be honored at the fourth annual event, a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Brownwood Country Club.
“The services these women have provided have benefited a wide variety of organizations and causes,” said Jan Cate, CEO for the Girl Scout council. “These seven women have touched the lives of many people simply by saying, ‘I’ll do that.’ They are, each, a living example of the impact one person can have when she makes the decision to serve her community and help her fellow citizens.”
Nearly 150 have made reservations for the luncheon today, Cate said.
“We have had an outstanding response and we are thrilled so many are making the effort to let these women know how appreciated they are.”
Kay Martinez, treasurer for the council’s board of directors, said the response to this event and by the women who have been selected benefits the girls in the program in a number of ways.
“The proceeds of all fund-raising activities go to fund the our programs which are available to all girls,” Martinez said. “The Women of Distinction luncheon is just one way in which the additional funding needed for our program is raised.”
The “Women of Distinction” event was begun in 2004, when Bernice Porter was the sole honoree, chosen from a number of nominees. Since then, the program has expanded. Mary Blake, Ann Jones, Kay Leipzig, Edda Ratliff and Ladon Spence were honored in 2005. Donna Hair, Jessie Hamilton, Mary Johnson, Ella B. Jones, Mariann Morris Tackett, Minnie Graves and Peggy Hensley were the 2006 honorees.
