Special to the Bulletin
The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System will launch its flu campaign at the Brownwood Community Based Outpatient Clinic during October with a free flu vaccination clinic for veterans enrolled in the health care system.
Flu vaccinations will be given at the Outpatient Clinic located at 2600 Memorial Park Drive in Brownwood weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m. during October and November. The clinic will be closed on federal holidays.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year.
Every year in the United States, on average, 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the flu, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and about 36,000 people die from flu.
Some, such as older people, young children and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications.
