The Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Child Protective Services are continuing an investigation into the death of a 4-month-old girl who was found unresponsive Friday at her Thunderbird Bay home.

Sheriff’s officials were awaiting autopsy results Tuesday from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“At this point it’s still unknown what we’re dealing with,” Sheriff Bobby Grubbs said. “The direction this investigation is going to take is going to depend on the medical examiner’s report.

“I’d call it a questionable death investigation. At this point we’re gathering all the information we can. It’s just an unexplained death we’ve got to get answers to.”

The girl’s father lay down on the couch around 4 a.m. with the baby on his chest, and the baby’s mother woke him up around 12:30 p.m. “asking what was wrong with her. She wasn’t responsive at all,” Grubbs said.

CPS received a referral and is conducting an investigation that will take about 30 days, CPS spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner said. She said state law requires an investigation “any time a child dies and there is a chance that child died due to abuse or neglect.”

She declined to comment on specifics of the case.
