Special to the Bulletin
The VFW Post 3278, the Ladies Auxiliary and friends of Linda Blocker are hosting a barbecue lunch on Friday, and, later that day, a parking lot dance with all proceeds going to support Linda and Bill Blocker.
Linda Blocker has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has been hospitalized since April. The expenses of her illness and extensive hospitalization have created a financial burden for her family, said Cheryl Campbell, member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
For years, Campbell said, Bill Blocker has managed the Allsup’s store in Early. Linda Blocker was manager for the Allsup’s on West Commerce.
Lunch will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW Post Home on Stephen F. Austin in Brownwood. Lunches will include chopped beef sandwiches, chips and beans and will sell for $5 per plate. Free delivery is available in the Brownwood and Early area for orders of five or more plates. Those who qualify for the free delivery offer are asked to call VFW (646-8113) in advance to place their order.
Or, Campbell said, those who get a group together on Friday morning and want to order then can call the VFW Bingo Hall at 641-0155.
The dance planned for Friday evening will be held in the parking lot at the VFW hall on Stephen F. Austin. In case of inclement weather, however, the event will be moved inside the hall.
Admission to the dance is also $5, and all proceeds are for the Blocker family.
Numerous businesses and citizens have donated items for a raffle, and Campbell said, raffle tickets, three for $1, are being sold.
“So many people know the Blockers, because of their work these many years,” Campbell said. “But they may not be aware that Linda is sick and the family needs help. We’re asking anyone who can to please help us help this family through their trying and difficult time.”
