Folks who purchased 2006-’07 Brown County Fair Association annual memberships will get a little taste of how much they’re appreciated this evening.

The fair association board is hosting the annual membership appreciation barbecue from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Home Ec building at the Brown County Youth Fair grounds, U.S. Highway 377 South.

The barbecue and all the fixin’s meal is served without charge to Brown County Fair Association members and their immediate families. No carry-out meals will be available, however.

The event marks the start of the 44th annual Brown County Rodeo week. This year’s rodeo opens at 8 p.m. Thursday for a three-night run at the Earl Q. Wilson Arena, adjacent to the fair grounds.

Each July since 1963, volunteers have organized the annual rodeo, staging it as a fund-raiser for the Brown County Youth Fair held each year in January. Last year, more than 700 volunteers and local business people donated time and money to get the show on the ground.

More than 400 Brown County youth entered approximately 1,900 animals and approximately 2,000 home economic food, craft or sewing projects in the Brown County Youth Fair in 2007. The $20 annual memberships help afford that huge effort.

At this evening’s barbecue, association members will receive a ballot and vote for six new board members. Candidates are (in alphabetical order) Travis Bundick, George Campbell, Brad Davis, Tammy Elliott, Jackie Hutson, Allen Leslie, Donna Lockett, Ben McInnis, Brent Moseley, Deann Perkins, Michael Richardson, Jerry Roberts, Barbara Stewart and Larry Traweek.

Rodeo tickets are available at KOXE, Scott’s Western Wear, Corral West, and both locations of Citizen’s National Bank.

Admission to the rodeo is $7 at the gate for adults, or $5 in advance, and $3 at the gate for kids and $2 in advance. A few box seats available for each performance night. For more information on the box seats, contact Jeanneene Johnson at 643-3545.
