Early High School will send members of its “Learning Involvement For Tomorrow” — or LIFT — Future Problem Solving team to international competition in Lansing, Mich., later this month. The Early Middle School eighth graders, who placed second at the state bowl this spring, told members of the Early school board about the program last Thursday night.

Some 50,000 students representing 12,500 teams competed for the opportunity to advance.

Teams from 45 states and several other countries will be represented. Teams from outside the United States will come from Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Toyko and Singapore.

Students are given a general topic, such as child labor, and then have two hours to develop 16 problems related to the issue and 16 solutions.

Lori Beck is the Early team’s sponsor. The school board approved funding to finance the team’s trip to the international conference.

Officials said the Early students placed second at the state conference behind Granbury, which has announced plans to discontinue its team after this year.
