Signs indicating that motorists are prohibited from using cell phones while traveling through school crossing zones have been installed in area school zones in accordance with a state law effective Sept. 1. City of Brownwood employee Glenn Burkman is shown near a sign at Howard Payne University at Fisk and Carnegie. The new law allows cell phones to be used if the vehicle is stopped or the device is used with a handsfree device such as an earpiece. Prosecution may be defended if a cell phone is used in making an emergency call to an emergency response service, hospital, fire or police department, health clinic, medical doctor’s office or an individual to administer first aid treatment.
