Special to the Bulletin

The Brownwood Fire Department will participate in the 2007 International Fire and EMS Safety Stand Down the week of June 17-23.

The stand down, themed “Ready to Respond,” will focus on preparing firefighters for their daily duties by reviewing their training and the proper use of equipment to ensure safe response and return from emergency calls, City of Brownwood Interim City Manager James Campbell announced.

“We are looking forward to participating in the Stand Down,” Brownwood Fire Chief Del Albright said. “The purpose for this annual Stand Down is to dedicate time to focus on safety and firefighters’ well-being so we may be ready at all times to answer the call for help and respond in a safe and efficient manner so all our firefighters can return home to their own families.”

Abandoning caution can cause routine activities to become hazardous, as evident in the many fire service line-of-duty deaths and injuries.

The department will conduct safety inspections on equipment, review training on safe emergency vehicle operations, participate in wellness/fitness exercise and conduct safety briefings. Volunteer fire departments in Brown County are invited to participate by bringing protective clothing and equipment to a Brownwood fire station for inspection.

In 2006, 105 firefighters died in the line of duty in the U.S., and 28 havedied so far this year.
