Homecoming activities at Howard Payne University get under way today with Yellow Jacket exes returning to campus for an assortment of events ranging from an alumni awards banquet tonight to a golf tournament and reunion Saturday.

The schedule opens with the homecoming coronation at 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, where chapel meetings are being held during the renovation of Mims Auditorium, and activities continue throughout today and Saturday. The weekend will conclude Sunday with an alumni-led worship service at 9 a.m. at Phelps Chapel and the 2:30 closing performance of “Bye Bye Birdie” at the HPU Theatre.

Part of today’s homecoming schedule will be the Golden Graduate luncheon for members of the Class of 1957 at noon at Bullion Suites at the Mabee Center, and the alumni banquet at 7 p.m. at Beadel Dining Hall.

Other events scheduled today are a women’s soccer game against Hardin-Simmons at 1 p.m. at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field, an alumni baseball game at 2 p.m. at Don Shepard Park, a men’s soccer game against H-SU at 3 p.m., Jacket Java Coffee House at Fambrough’s Grill at 8 p.m., the Class of 1957 reunion at Mabee Center at 9 a.m., a pep rally at Old Main Park at 10 p.m. and a bonfire at the National Guard Armory at 10:30 p.m.

Other performances of “Bye Bye Birdie” will be at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday.

Saturday’s schedule begins with a Letterman’s Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Mabee Center balcony, and continental breakfasts are planned for the Classes of 1947 and 1967 at 8 a.m. at Mabee Center. An alumni and university golf tournament will open at 8 a.m. at Brownwood Country Club.

The HPU Concert Choir will perform at 9 a.m. at First Baptist Church, prior to the 10 a.m. parade.

After the parade, reunions by the African-America Alumni Chapter, Chi Alpha Omega, Delta Chi Rho, Zeta Zeta Zeta and the Classes of 1967, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992 and 1997 will be held.

Picnic on the Plaza will be served at 11:30 a.m. at Muse Mall and Plaza. The women’s soccer team will face McMurry at 1 p.m., with the men’s teams scheduled to play at 3 p.m. The HPU football game will host Louisiana College at 2 p.m. at Gordon Wood Stadium.

After the game, or around 5 p.m., the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom will hold a reception at the Hall of Christian Civilization. The Sports Hall of Fame banquet will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Mabee Center.
