A Brownwood boy just under 2 years old was pronounced dead Sunday at Cook Children’s Medical Center after his mother pulled him from their backyard swimming pool Friday evening, police said.
Jayden McPartland, whose father is deployed with the military in Iraq, died in an accidental drowning, Brownwood police Sgt. Troy Carroll said. He said Jayden’s second birthday would have been later this month.
Brownwood patrolman Danny Hutchins was dispatched to a “possible drowning” at 4005 Glenwood Dr. at 6 p.m. Friday. Brownwood firefighters were performing CPR on Jayden, Hutchins’ report states.
Jayden’s mother, Sandy McPartland, 23, said she, her mother and her two children — Jayden and 4-year-old Sierra — had been inside the house. After a few minutes of not hearing from the children, she began calling for them. During a search of the residence, she found Sierra, and then found Jayden in the in-ground swimming pool, Hutchins’ report states.
Sandy McPartland jumped into the pool, pulled him out and carried him into the house. She called 9-1-1, then ran to a neighbor as he pulled up across the street and asked for help.
The neighbor performed CPR until Brownwood firefighters arrived, Hutchins’ report states. The neighbor, reached by phone Monday afternoon, declined to comment.
The boy was transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center, where emergency room staff were able to get a pulse. He was flown later to the Fort Worth hospital, fire officials said.
Sandy McPartland said she thinks Jayden exited the house by using the doggie door and could not have been in the pool, which is 5 feet deep at its deep end, for more than 10 or 15 minutes, Hutchins’ report states. She told Hutchins Jayden and his sister go in and out of the doggie door. She said Jayden could not reach the handle on the back door.
