Mediation in a potential civil lawsuit related to the actions of former Brownwood Police Sgt. Vince Ariaz, originally scheduled for July 25, has been rescheduled for Sept. 19, Brownwood City Attorney Pat Chesser said.

He said the rescheduling was “purely logistics” and was necessary in order for all of the parties to attend.

An Austin attorney sent Chesser a letter in April that named the city, Ariaz and Police Chief Virgil Cowin as potential defendants. The letter, from Scott Ozmun of the Whitehurst, Harkness, Ozmun and Breese law firm invited the city to negotiate a settlement in lieu of a lawsuit.

Chesser has said the matter has been referred to the city’s liability insurance carrier, the Texas Municipal League’s Intergovernmental Risk Pool.

He has said he doesn’t know how much money might be involved in settling the matter.

Ozmun represents the family of a Brownwood Police Explorer Ariaz was accused of having sexual contact with in multiple incidents. Ariaz was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
