The U.S. Army recruiting office will celebrate the 232nd birthday of its branch of the military Thursday with ceremonies honoring servicemen.

SSG Jason Isbell, whose office is in Heartland Mall in Early, said the U.S. Army was formed by order of the 2nd Continental Congress on June 14, 1775. The day is also observed as Flag Day.

The birthday celebration will be held from 2:30 until 4 p.m. Thursday at Lemons Bar-B-Q on Coggin Avenue near the Brady Highway. A birthday cake is scheduled to be cut by one of the newest members of the Army along with one of the oldest Army veterans in the county, recruiters said.

Special recognition is being planned for a large group of Brownwood High School graduates who have enlisted in the Army.

“Soldiers have always and will continue to defend the citizens of the United States of America against all her enemies,” Isbell said. “On this day, we will honor all our great nation’s soldiers — past, present and future.”

The U.S. Army has been instrumental in all facets of the nation’s history, he added.
