Flames from a burning couch outside a Brownwood apartment spread into the building’s attic, damaging four apartments and displacing five adults and an infant, Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston said.
Preston said the fire, which was reported at 8:37 p.m. Monday at 1708 Third, may have been set. He said he has questioned two male “young people” who are suspects. He would not elaborate. He said he has not yet determined how the fire started.
The couch that burned was on the back porch of apartment 5, and the fire got into the soffit and into the attic, Preston said. The fire traveled down the attic, damaging apartments 5, 6 and 7, with smoke and heat damage to apartment 8, he said.
“Lotta flames, lotta smoke,” Preston said. “Everybody got out safely.”
He said firefighters stopped the fire after “a very aggressive interior attack.”
“Firefighters ventilated the roof and made a very good stop on the fire,” Preston said. “The fire department made a heck of a stop on it.”
Preston said he didn’t know if the apartment building has a name, but said it has a total of eight apartments.
