Bulletin Staff Report

Members of the board of trustees of the Brownwood Independent School District will formally recognize the Class 3A state runnerup Brownwood High School Lady Lions volleyball team when they meet for their December meeting at 6:30 p.m. today.

The board will convene at the district administrative offices at 2707 Southside Dr. The meeting is open to the public.

Business awaiting trustees includes consideration of approval of the 2007-2008 fiscal year financial audit, approval of an amendment to Professional Development Appraisal System, approval of Update 84 as recommended by the Texas Association of School Boards and personnel matters. The personnel item may prompt the board to go into a closed meeting. The resignation of Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Steve Freeman is not specifically listed on the agenda; his announcement came Friday, the day after the agenda was posted.

According to the agenda, the superintendent’s report will include information on finances, an update on construction and maintenance, a report on the ACT and SAT, information on the Highly Qualified Teacher initiative, a discussion on the policy for naming buildings, information on a high school security surveillance proposal, and a tour of facilities by Huckabee and Associates, architects, and information from the public relations committee.

The Brownwood High Lady Lions made their first appearance in a volleyball state championship match this year, finishing as runnerup in the Class 3A title game against fellow first-time finalist and top-ranked Lucas Lovejoy. The state tournament was held Nov. 21-22 at Texas State University’s Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos.

The Lady Lions capped their remarkable run with a 33-10 record, and Coach Mary Steed described it as a “Cinderella season, the one coaches and players dream about.”
